The Israeli occupation destroyed their home and displaced them several times.
Now they are sheltering in a tent, and food is extremely expensive since Israel has blocked aid from coming in.
Here is Ahmed’s story, in his own words.
I am Ahmed from Gaza.
I live with my family in the hell of war.
The occupation destroyed our house without warning. It is the height of pain.
I see my little sisters as we pull them out from under the rubble.
My father is injured and unable to move.
Since that time, I have taken responsibility for my family in our migration from one place to another under unfortunate circumstances without clean water. Or suitable food, even for cooking. We used firewood in that.
We lost everything, and all we have left is hope for a better life, with your help and support for us to complete our education and live a decent life.

More about the torch design
In 1987 the church introduced the Young Women torch logo
Girls 12 years and older entering the program received a necklace featuring it.
“We want young women to gain an identity with the Church. We're anxious to have something that would help them gain that identity.”
-Ardeth G. Kapp, former Young Women General President
"The logo was designed for young women and their leaders to remind them to stand for truth and righteousness … We like to think that our light comes from the pure source—the light of Christ.”
-Elaine L. Jack, former second counselor in the Young Women general presidency
In 2021 I proposed a reclamation of that identity
I created these necklaces and pins to offer a symbol of healing for those hurt by the Young Women program. And people from all over the place joined me, raising just over $5,000 for the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake.
About 20,000 Shoshone, Goshute, Ute, Paiute, Timpanogos, and Navajo people were already living on the land when Mormon settlers showed up and called it theirs (so-called Utah). My ancestors stood complicit in genocide, land grabs, and cultural erasure, then named themselves heroic.
As a small step toward reparation, 100% of the proceeds went to this community hub that serves those affected by generations of settler-colonial violence.
